We are only worthy because of the Blood of Jesus has purchased us His righteousness in God’s sight.

Before Jesus was crucified, He had a crown of thorns shoved on His head which would have caused bleeding from scalp and forehead wounds.

Jesus was then scourged by a type of whip the Romans used that may have had pieces of sharp bone and metal tied into its thongs.

In a medical article published in the American Medical Association journal in March 1986 (1) it was estimated that “the scourging Jesus suffered would have caused a blood loss of as much as a quarter to a third of the His body’s total blood supply.

At His actual crucifixion Jesus was attached to the cross with spikes five to seven inches long that were driven one each through His wrists and one through both of His feet. There are no major arteries at the sites of the nailings, but there would have been some minimal blood loss none-the-less.”

However, the Bible tells us that a Roman soldier pierced Jesus side with a spear and the blood and water flowed from the resulting wound.

Background:

The reality of the blood of Christ as the means of atonement for sin has its origin in the Mosaic Law.

Once a year, the priest was to make an offering of the blood of animals on the altar of the temple for the sins of the people. “In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22).

But this was a blood offering that was limited in its effectiveness, which is why it had to be offered again and again. This was a foreshadowing of the “once for all” sacrifice which Jesus offered on the cross (Hebrews 7:27).

Once that sacrifice was made, there was no longer a need for the blood of bulls and goats.

The blood of Christ is the basis of the New Covenant. On the night before He went to the cross, Jesus offered the cup of wine to His disciples and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:20).

The pouring of the wine in the cup symbolized the blood of Christ which would be poured out for all who would ever believe in Him.

What Does It Mean For Us?

a) His blood gives us power over the devil:

It’s the blood that satan fears. Revelation 12:11 says, “And they overcame him [satan] by the blood of the Lamb….”

The devil doesn’t want you to learn about the blood. He hates it!

b) The blood of Jesus paid for the penalty for our sins:

“so Christ, having been offered once and once for all to bear [as a burden] the sins of many, will appear a second time [when he returns to earth], not to deal with sin, but to bring salvation to those who are eagerly and confidently waiting for Him.” (Hebrews 9:28 AMP)

c) We are justified before God:

“Therefore, since we have now been justified [declared free of the guilt of sin] by His blood, [how much more certain is it that] we will be saved from the wrath of God through Him.” (Romans 5:9 AMP)

d) We are forgiven:

“In Him we have redemption [that is, our deliverance and salvation] through His blood, [which paid the penalty for our sin and resulted in] the forgiveness and complete pardon of our sin, in accordance with the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7 AMP)

e) We are spared from God’s righteous anger:

“And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, He will certainly save us from God’s condemnation.” (Romans 5:9 NLT)

“He who believes and trusts in the Son and accepts Him [as Saviour] has eternal life [that is, already possesses it]; but he who does not believe the Son and chooses to reject Him, [disobeying Him and denying Him as Saviour] will not see [eternal] life, but [instead] the wrath of God hangs over him continually.” (John 3:36 AMP)

f) We are healed:

“He personally carried our sins in His body on the cross [willingly offering Himself on it, as on an altar of sacrifice], so that we might die to sin [becoming immune from the penalty and power of sin] and live for righteousness; for by His wounds you [who believe] have been healed.” (1 Peter 2:24 AMP)

g) We have been made spiritually alive:

“And Jesus said to them, ‘I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood [unless you believe in Me as Saviour and believe in the saving power of My blood which will be shed for you], you do not have life in yourselves’.” (John 6:53 AMP)

h) We are cleansed:

“But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7 NLT)

“and from Jesus Christ, the faithful and trustworthy Witness, the Firstborn of the dead, and the Ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who [always] loves us and who [has once for all] freed us [or washed us] from our sins by His own blood (His sacrificial death)” (Revelation 1:5 AMP)

i) We are freed from the curse of the law:

“But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree’.” (Galatians 3:13 NLT)

j) We are part of God’s covenant promises to Israel:

“In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope. But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.” (Ephesians 2:12-13 NLT)

k) We have been atoned for:

“For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life [which it represents].” (Leviticus 17:11 AMP)

l) We have been made righteous before God:

“He made Christ who knew no sin to [judicially] be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we would become the righteousness of God [that is, we would be made acceptable to Him and placed in a right relationship with Him by His gracious lovingkindness].” (2 Corinthians 5:21 AMP)

m) We can draw near to God:

“But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.” (Ephesians 2:13 NLT)

n) Our salvation is assured in Jesus:

“For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.” (1 Peter 1:18-19 NLT)

o) We are free:

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36 NIV)

“It was for this freedom that Christ set us free [completely liberating us]; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery [which you once removed].” (Galatians 5:1 AMP)
