How to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit:

1. Desire:

You must want to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

John 7:37-39 ” On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.  Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”  By this He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.”

Luke 11:9,10,13 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened……If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

2. Repent:

We need to be clean vessels for God’s “Holy” Spirit. We must confess, (speak out), our sins and ask Him to forgive us.

1 John 1:8-10 “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.  If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His Word has no place in our lives.”

3. Wait:

After asking for God’s forgiveness you need to wait in an attitude of prayer and silence in His presence.

Acts 1:14 “They all joined together constantly in prayer…”

Romans 8:27 “And He Who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.”

* Note: We need to pray that God will reveal any sin, or fear, or doubt through wrong teaching, so that it may be confessed and removed.

4. Believe:

Mark 11:22-24 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.  “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

1 John 5:14-15 “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.  And if we know that He hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of Him.”

* Note: the Baptism of the Holy Spirit can only be real to you, if there is belief that there is such a thing and that it is meant for you today.

(In other words you must believe from the Bible in the reality of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and that it is available as a gift from God to all Christians who want to receive it.)

Acts 2:38-39 “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the Name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

5. Ask:

Ask Jesus to fill you with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 11:9-13 ” So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?  If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

* Note: It may be helpful to have someone who is already Baptised in the Holy Spirit praying with you:

Acts 8:14-17 “When the Apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.  When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptised into the Name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 19:6 “When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.”

Acts 9:17 “Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here – has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

6. Receive:

You receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit by faith in God and God’s Word.

Mark 11:24 “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Remember, ” … how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.”

7. Expect:

Remember that the Christian life is a life of faith.  We receive all of God’s blessings and promises by faith – including the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and the Gifts of the Spirit.

* Note: Expect to receive spiritual gifts confirming the reality of your Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Acts 19:6 “When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.”

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  To one there is given through the Spirit the (gift of) message of wisdom, to another the (gift of) message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another (gift of) faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another (gift of) miraculous powers, to another (gift of) prophecy, to another (gift of) distinguishing between spirits, to another (gift of) speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the (gift of) interpretation of tongues.  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as He determines.”

8. Start:

Step out in faith and begin to live and minister in God’s power using the Gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). Pray in your prayer language, and be guided by the Holy Spirit.

Acts 6:5,8 “This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. ….. Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.”

Acts 8:5-7 “Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed.”

Note:

  • Both Stephen and Philip, (the Evangelist), started off by waiting on tables (Acts 6:1-7).  As they stepped out in faith and began to minister in the power of the Holy Spirit, God was able to use them in great wonders and miraculous signs.
  • God can and will use all who want to be used, however God can use us so much more if we are willing to do His work, His way, in His, (Holy Spirit), power.
