Distortion #5 A Christian can never get angry about anything – whatever the reason or cause

I personally love the meme on the Internet titled: “If anyone ever asks you ‘What Would Jesus Do?’ remind them that flipping over tables and chasing people with a whip is within the realm of possibilities”.

Anger, the right sort of anger, for the right reasons, is not sin.

But the Bible warns us that in our anger be very careful not to commit other sins, and the Bible tells us not to let the sun go down on our anger.

In other words, we are not to carry our anger, for doing so can turn our anger to hatred.

It is also not good for our own physical, emotional, mental or spiritual health.

We need to understand that meekness is not in a man’s outward behaviour only, nor in his relations to his fellow man, or his mere natural disposition, but an in-wrought grace of the soul expressed primarily toward God. (James 1:21; 3:13; 1Peter 3:15)

It is that attitude of spirit by which we accept God’s dealings with us as good, and we do not dispute or resist God’s dealings with us.

The Greek word for meekness is ‘Prautes‘ which, according to Aristotle, is the middle ground between two extremes: getting angry without reason, and not getting angry at all.

Therefore ‘prautes’, ‘meekness’, is getting angry at the right time, in the right measure, and for the right reason.

‘Prautes’ is not readily expressed in English since the term meekness suggests weakness, but it is a condition of mind and heart which demonstrates gentleness, not in weakness but in power.

It is a balance born in strength and character.

According to the Bible: “For the LORD disciplines those that He loves, and He punishes each one whom He accepts as His child.” (Hebrews 12:6)

    A word I will share!
