Examples of Baptism in the Holy Spirit in the New Testament church :

1. Pentecost, the first outpouring of the Holy Spirit:

Acts 2:1-4 “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

2. Place shaken, all filled:

Acts 4:31 “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

3. Stephen:

Acts 7:55 “But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.”

4. Samaritan Christians:

Acts 8:17 “Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit”

5. Saul (Paul):

Acts 9:17-18 “Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord–Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here – has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”  Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptised ”

Acts 13:9 “Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said,”

1 Corinthians 14:18 “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.”

6. Cornelius and his company:

Acts 10:44-47 “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.

For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, “Can anyone keep these people from being baptised with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”

7. The Ephesian believers:

Acts 19:6-7 “When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.  There were about twelve men in all.”

* Note that:

  • the Bible is very specific in calling this group of people, disciples (v.1).
  • The Bible is equally specific in showing that they had been already water baptised for repentance of sins (v.3-4).
  • The Bible is just as specific that in the Name of the Lord Jesus they were Baptised in the Holy Spirit
  • as confirmed by their speaking in tongues and prophesying (v.5-7).

8. Barnabas:

Acts 11:24 “He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.”
